Tinhead
During a lecture in a workshop week, the professor showed images of inmates hugging each other as part of a theatrical performance with buckets on their heads. She explained that this was accidental, one inmate suddenly equipped a bucket on their head and so did the others follow-suit.
She explained that this random occurrence allowed the inmates to ignore the social conventions of prison life, allowing them to easier fall into their roles, becoming a major part of the theatrical performance. To explore how methodology affects creative outcome, we were asked to do the following: engage in a creative endeavor while feeling uncomfortable.
Since I hate crowds, and inspired by her images, I decided to take self-portraits in public areas. With a camera on a tripod, and 12 second delay-timer – I had to rush into position as people gave me perplexed looks as I put a bucket on my head alongside an umbrella in broad daylight. I ignored the looks as best I could, and was pleasantly surprised about how well the photographs were received.
